MarketCarpets
Our MarketCarpet tool lets you see “at-a-glance” what an entire market is doing and which stocks are making the largest upside and downside moves.

Individual stocks or other securities are represented as colored squares on the carpet. By default, the squares are colored on a green-to-red spectrum with bright green securities performing the best and bright red securities performing the worst.
A sidebar on the right side of the page ranks the securities from your chosen group by performance. Mousing over a square provides more information about that security, including a mini-chart showing its recent performance.
MarketCarpets are great for visually scanning and ranking a large collection of stocks simultaneously and quickly finding the best and worst performers for a given period. They are designed to be graphically efficient and are especially useful for sector analysis. Like securities, market sectors also trend; consequently, MarketCarpets are a fantastic tool for identifying the strength of a sector, as analysts can use them to determine the strong securities within the sector.

Creating a MarketCarpet
There are several ways to create a MarketCarpet on StockCharts.com. The easiest ways are the following:
Choose MarketCarpets from the Charts & Tools menu at the top of most pages on our site.
From Your Dashboard, click on the MarketCarpets link in the Member Tools area.
Once you've loaded the MarketCarpet tool, you can select a predefined MarketCarpet from the Select Group dropdown menu above the chart.
The MarketCarpet Tool
There are several important sections of the MarketCarpet tool.

The MarketCarpet Itself
Settings determining what data is shown on the MarketCarpet

The use of each of these sections is described below.

Color-Coding of Squares
MarketCarpets are often about finding outliers—the bright red and bright green squares. In addition, look for general clusters of greens versus reds. For example, which sector is greenest on the S&P 500 Sector MarketCarpet? Which is the most red?
The legend below the carpet will give you an idea of what values are considered to be at the far ends of the spectrum for that carpet.
By default, the MarketCarpet tool uses a red-to-green color scheme, but you can choose from a variety of other color-coding schemes using the Color Scheme dropdown menu above the carpet.
Table Data
There is a sidebar panel on the right of the MarketCarpet that shows all the symbols in the carpet, ranked by their value on the carpet (whether it be percent price change or some other measurement). This sort can be useful if the trading day was relatively flat and it's difficult to identify the top performers.
You can hide or show this sidebar panel by clicking the Table button at top right of the MarketCarpet.
Symbol Info
Each square shows the symbol and the percentage change by default. To toggle this off and just show plain squares, uncheck the Show Symbols checkbox above the carpet.
Hovering your mouse over a square on the carpet will pop up a small box showing the symbol, full name of the security, carpet value, and a mini-chart for that symbol. To turn off either the info or the mini-chart, uncheck the relevant checkboxes above the carpet.

If you want to do deeper research on the symbol, double-click on a square to open the full Symbol Summary for that ticker symbol.
Zooming In
Many of the predefined MarketCarpets have the symbols divided into subgroups. For example, the S&P 500 MarketCarpet has the individual stocks organized into sector groups. To zoom in on one specific sector, click the header with the sector name.

The MarketCarpet will zoom in to show only the symbols in that sector. To zoom back out again and see the entire MarketCarpet, click the back arrow at the top of the carpet.
Configuring the Data Shown on the Carpet
Group
By default, the MarketCarpet shows the symbols of the S&P 500, divided into sub-groups for each of the 11 sectors.
To view a carpet with a different set of symbols, just change your selection in the Select Group dropdown menu above the carpet. We offer MarketCarpets for major indexes, US sectors, and other commonly-analyzed groups of stocks, indexes, ETFs, mutual funds, and cryptocurrencies.
Measurement
By default, MarketCarpets use price performance data to color their squares, but there are many other measures that can be analyzed with a MarketCarpet. Use the Measurements dropdown menu above the carpet to choose the measure you wish to use:
Price
Performance: The percentage change in closing price during the selected date range
[Up Days] - [Down Days]: A general breadth measurement
Technicals
SCTR: The StockCharts Technical Rank rating
RSI: Welles Wilder's popular momentum indicator
PPO: A percentage version of the popular MACD momentum indicator
Aroon Oscillator: An indicator that measures trend strength
Bollinger Band Width: A measure of volatility
Bollinger Band Position: A measure of a stock's variation from its mean
StochRSI: A more sensitive version of the RSI
Full Stochastics: Another popular momentum indicator
You can find more information about these indicators in the Technical Indicators section of ChartSchool.
Timeframe
By default, the measurement will be calculated based on the 1-day change in price or indicator value. If you're a longer-term investor, you may prefer to view performance data over a longer timeframe.
You can change this setting using the Color By dropdown menu above the carpet, which offers a number of percent change timeframes from one day (1D) to one year (1Y). For the technical indicator measurements, you can also choose to display the latest value instead of the percent change values.
Square Size
The Size By setting above the MarketCarpet allows you to specify how the squares are sized on the carpet. By default, they are sized proportional to each symbol's market cap value, with larger companies having much larger squares than smaller companies. Change the setting to Equal Weight to have each square the same size. The Price option for Size By can be useful for symbols that do not have a market cap (e.g. indexes, mutual funds, cryptocurrencies).
Other MarketCarpet Settings
Auto-Refresh
To make sure the MarketCarpet is updated as prices change during market hours, make sure the Auto-Refresh checkbox above the carpet is checked.
Resizing the Carpet
To hide the table and maximize space in your browser window for the carpet, click the Table button at top right of the MarketCarpet.
You can also toggle the carpet to full screen mode using the Full Screen button to the left of the Table button. Click the button again to return the carpet to its original size.
Sharing a MarketCarpet
Once you have configured the MarketCarpet to meet your needs, you may want to share it with another member or just bookmark it for later use. To do this, click the Share button at top right of the MarketCarpet tool.
A special URL will be generated that includes all the carpet settings you have changed. Click the Copy Link button and then paste the URL in a message to a friend, a social media post, or wherever you'd like to share your MarketCarpet.
To bookmark the carpet, simply paste the URL into your browser, and once it loads the page from that new URL, you can bookmark the page as usual.
Viewing ChartLists in MarketCarpet Format
Members can also use MarketCarpet charts to view ChartLists. From Your Dashboard, select MarketCarpet from the View As dropdown next to the ChartList you wish to view. Alternatively, you can switch to MarketCarpet format from other ChartList formats, such as Summary View, Gallery View, or CandleGlance View. Select MarketCarpet from the View List As dropdown.
The MarketCarpet View displays all the charts on your ChartList in MarketCarpet format. Above the chart, you can use the Select List dropdown to choose a different ChartList to display.
