Our MarketCarpet page lets you see “at-a-glance” what an entire market is doing. At a glance, the MarketCarpet will show you which stocks are making the largest upside and downside moves.
Individual stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds, and cryptocurrencies are represented as squares that are, by default, colored on a green-to-red spectrum.
A sidebar on the right side of the page displays the best and worst performers from your chosen group and allows you to view the performance of a stock (or sector) on a line chart.
MarketCarpets are great for visually scanning and ranking a large collection of stocks simultaneously and quickly finding the best and worst performers for a given period. They are designed to be graphically efficient and are especially useful for sector analysis. Like securities, market sectors also trend; consequently, MarketCarpets is a fantastic tool for identifying the strength of a sector, as analysts can use them to determine the strong securities within the sector.

There are several ways to create a MarketCarpet on StockCharts.com. The easiest ways are the following:
Click on Charts & Tools, then choose one of the predefined MarketCarpets from the dropdown in the MarketCarpets card.
From Your Dashboard, click on the MarketCarpets link in the Member Tools area.
Once on the MarketCarpet page, you can select a predefined MarketCarpet from the dropdown menu below the chart.
There are several important sections of the MarketCarpet page.
Select Group— The default setting shows the MarketCarpet grouped by the 11 S&P 500 sectors. You have a ton of other ways to group the stocks. Some exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds are also in the Select Group dropdown menu.
Measurements— There are different ways to determine how a stock, ETF, or mutual fund is performing. Most investors look at performance as a percentage, but other methods exist. In the StockCharts MarketCarpet, investors can measure based on other metrics such as the StockCharts Technical Rank (SCTR) score, relative strength index (RSI), and other indicators. See all your choices from the Measurements dropdown menu.
Color By— If you’re a longer-term investor, you may prefer to view performance longer than the one-day change. Check out your choices in this dropdown menu.
Size By— Filter the MarketCarpet by market cap, equal weight, or price.
Color Scheme— You don’t necessarily have to stick with the red-to-green color scheme. You’ve got other choices, which you can find from the Color Scheme dropdown menu.
Auto-Refresh, Show Symbols, Info Box on Hover, Mini Chart on Hover— These are checked by default. If you see a stock that’s outperforming or underperforming, hovering your mouse over the symbol and seeing the mini chart and additional details is helpful in making a quick analysis.
Full-Screen Toggle, Table, Share— The icons on the top right allow you to maximize or minimize your screen, a helpful feature if you use devices of different sizes. You can also view a table of all the stocks, ETFs, or mutual funds in the group you’re viewing and share the MarketCarpet.
When viewing the table of stocks, the symbols can be sorted by value and performance. So if a trading day is relatively flat and it’s difficult to identify the top performers, viewing the table eliminates the guesswork.
Want to bookmark, save, or share a specific MarketCarpet? You can do this with the Share button.
If you double-click on any box on the MarketCarpet, it will open up the Symbol Summary for the symbol you selected.
On the bottom right of the MarketCarpet is a legend.
When you hover your mouse over a carpet, the company name, last price quote, and a mini chart will display.
MarketCarpets are often about finding outliers—the bright red and green squares. Also, look for general clusters of greens versus reds. For example, which sector is greenest on the S&P 500 Sector Carpet? Which is the most red?
By default, MarketCarpets uses price data to color its squares when viewing performance. However, there are different ways to view measurement. Use the dropdown menus at the top to choose how you want the information displayed.
