# Screener

StockCharts' Screener offers a quick way for StockCharts members to find stocks, ETFs, indexes, mutual funds, or other securities that fit specific technical requirements. This tool allows you to construct simple scans from a number of pre-created criteria. Its visual interface for building and saving custom screens requires no knowledge of scan syntax.

<figure><img src="/files/AbP7UDSbCsPOegfnySug" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The Screen Criteria section at the top of the tool allows you to define the securities and conditions you want to screen for. The Screen Results section at the bottom of the screener allows you to review the securities that match your selected criteria.

## Accessing the Screener

The easiest way to access the screener is to select **Screener** from the **Scans & Alerts** menu at the top of most pages on our site.

It can also be accessed using the link in the **Member Tools** area of [Your Dashboard](https://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/Favorites.CServlet).

## Building a Screen

A screen consists of one or more criteria that define which securities should be included in the results. The available criteria are grouped into tabs in the Screen Criteria section at the top of the screener.

<figure><img src="/files/WoPqGzyBQdrRPqtT3pvv" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add criteria to your screen using the dropdown menus in the Screen Criteria section.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Choosing a Universe

The **Groups** tab is where you specify the universe of securities that you want to focus on. Just like when building a scan, it is important to define what types of securities you are interested in, so your results are not full of UK stocks when you're more interested in US mutual funds, for example.

On the Groups tab, you can select one or more criteria to define your universe based on the security type, country, exchange, SCTR universe, index membership, sector/industry, or even limit your screen to symbols that you have saved to a specific ChartList.

### Other Screen Criteria

The other tabs in the Screen Criteria section allow you to further filter your screen results based on key properties, technical conditions, fundamentals, and more:

* **Key Properties:** filter based on market cap, dividends, earnings dates, and more
* **Price / Performance:** filter based on current price, price changes, relative performance, highs/lows, and more
* **Technicals:** filter based on key technical measures, including volume, moving averages, RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, SCTR values, and more
* **Chart Patterns:** filter based on gaps and other popular bullish and bearish chart patterns, including candlestick and P\&F patterns
* **Fundamentals:** filter based on key fundamentals, including P/E, EPS, revenue, and more

### Adding and Removing Criteria

Adding criteria to your screen is easy. Simply click on a dropdown menu in the Screen Criteria area and choose the desired criteria to add it to your screen.

<figure><img src="/files/PrsmzmTBtE0XGuShBPYY" alt=""><figcaption><p>This menu allows you to add screen criteria related to 20-day EMAs.</p></figcaption></figure>

As criteria are added, they appear in the **Groups + Filters** summary area at the bottom of the Screen Criteria section.

<figure><img src="/files/kDVsZx9UezidfUewI6cr" alt=""><figcaption><p>The Groups + Filters are shows you all the criteria that have been added to your screen.</p></figcaption></figure>

To remove criteria from your screen, click the red X on the criteria you want to remove in the Groups + Filters area. To remove all criteria and go back to the default criteria (Group: S\&P 100), click the **Reset** button in the Groups + Filters area.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Note:** Be sure to choose a universe for your screen. At least one criteria from the Groups tab must be selected before the screener will return results.
{% endhint %}

### Saving Your Screen

Once you have set all the criteria, you may want to save the screen to your account, so that you can open it and run it again in the future without having to rebuild it from scratch.

To save the screen, click the **Save As** button at the top of the screener, and choose a name for your new screen.

<figure><img src="/files/Z3y3MP97iyhWc3LmNk38" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the Save As button to save your screen for later use.</p></figcaption></figure>

Once the screen is saved, you can use the buttons at the top of the screener to rename the screen, resave it after changing the screen criteria, save a copy of it, or delete it. Use the Your Saved Screens dropdown menu to select a different saved screen to load in the screener. The New button resets the screener to a brand new, unsaved screen with the default criteria.

<figure><img src="/files/O9LLjjbUHdXnrFWZyisB" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the menu and buttons at the top of the screener to open, edit, save, or delete saved screens.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Converting a Screen to an Advanced Scan

The screener is designed to simplify common screening tasks, while the Advanced Scan Workbench provides maximium flexibility for creating highly customized scans.

If you find that you need more flexibility than the Screener provides, you can convert a screen into a scan for use in the Advanced Scan Workbench. Converting a screen to a scan allows you to access the full power of StockCharts scanning:

* Create more complex conditions and logic.
* Add advanced technical criteria not available in the screener.
* Combine multiple conditions using custom scan language.
* Take advantage of advanced scan features available in the Advanced Scan Workbench.

To convert a screen to an advanced scan, create or open the screen you want to convert, then click the **Convert to Scan** button in the Groups + Filters area.

<figure><img src="/files/wymmDLgLoCoHnRzBiAmi" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the Convert To Scan button to turn your screen into an advanced scan.</p></figcaption></figure>

The criteria in your screen will be converted into scan syntax and displayed in the Advanced Scan Workbench. From there, you can review and modify the scan code as needed, then save the scan in your account for future use.

## Viewing Screen Results

As you add and remove criteria for your screen, the Screen Results section at the bottom of the screener is automatically updated to show securities that match your criteria. The number of matching securities and the date of the screen are shown above the table.

<figure><img src="/files/B2VIuCVxNv04KM1pMARX" alt=""><figcaption><p>Securities matching your screen criteria will be shown at the bottom of the screener.</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="success" %}
**Cool Tip:** To refresh the screen results without changing any screen criteria, click the **Refresh** button at the top right of the Screen Results section.
{% endhint %}

StockCharts offers three different ways to view your screen results: Summary, SharpCharts, and CandleGlance. Use the tabs at the top left of the Screen Results section to choose which viewing mode you want to use for your screen results.

### Summary View of Results

This view of screen results is similar to the Summary View that you use for viewing ChartLists. The results are shown in a table with a row for each symbol returned by the screen.

<figure><img src="/files/7GZkwrfui67DnlexHYz7" alt=""><figcaption><p>Screen results shown in a table on the Summary tab</p></figcaption></figure>

Hover over the symbol to view a mini-chart. Click on the Actions menu (three lines icon) next to a Symbol in order to launch a full-size SharpChart, Symbol Summary, and more. From the Actions menu, you can also save that symbol to a ChartList or create a price alert for it.

<figure><img src="/files/kuBvmdnsvkeMV9jhHq1Z" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the Actions menu to launch charts, save charts, or create price alerts for the symbol</p></figcaption></figure>

Click on a column header to sort the table by that column. Clicking again will toggle the direction (ascending or descending) of the sort.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Cool Tip:** The results table supports second-order sorting. This allows you to sub-sort a column within another sorted column. For example, you may wish to see the results displayed such that the Industries are shown in order under their respective Sectors. To do that, sort by the Sector column, then hold down the shift key while clicking to sort by the Industry column.
{% endhint %}

A search box above the Results Table allows you to filter the screen results by keyword.

### SharpCharts View of Results

This view of screen results is similar to the ChartList View that you use for viewing ChartLists. It shows full-size SharpCharts in your default ChartStyle for each symbol in the screen results, one after the other. This can be an excellent way to visually validate potential opportunities.

<figure><img src="/files/hebmcqOKxvmELqNRsWEo" alt=""><figcaption><p>Full-size charts for screen results shown on the SharpCharts tab</p></figcaption></figure>

Sort the charts in the list using the **Sort By** and **Sort Order** menus at the top of the list. Use the **Jump to Chart** menu to scroll down to a specific chart. Clicking on the chart will launch that SharpChart in the SharpCharts Workbench.

### CandleGlance View of Results

This view of screen results is similar to the CandleGlance View that you use for viewing ChartLists. A mini-chart is shown for each symbol in the screen results, allowing you to quickly browse through charts for each of the symbols.

<figure><img src="/files/31vg0zPNTOQO89EmLfnm" alt=""><figcaption><p>Mini-charts for screen results shown on the CandleGlance tab</p></figcaption></figure>

Sort the charts in the list using the **Sort By** and **Sort Order** menus at the top of the list. Click on the mini-chart to launch a full-size SharpChart for that symbol in the SharpCharts Workbench.

**Note:** If you have created a custom CandleGlance ChartSyle in your account, that style will be used on the CandleGlance view of your screen results.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Learn More:** [CandleGlance Charts](/charts-and-tools/other-charting-tools/candleglance-charts.md) | Tool-Specific ChartStyles
{% endhint %}

### Saving Screen Results

Extra and Pro users can save some or all of the symbols returned by their screen to a ChartList for further analysis. Saving the results to a ChartList allows you to track those securities over time using a variety of StockCharts tools, and easily remove symbols that no longer meet your needs.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Note:** Saving results to a ChartList creates a snapshot of the current screen results. If prices change or screen criteria are modified later, the ChartList will not update automatically. Run the screen again and save the updated results to refresh the ChartList.
{% endhint %}

Screen results can be saved from the Summary tab of your screen results. Select specific symbols that you want to save by checking the checkbox in the leftmost column for those symbols, then clicking the green **Save To ChartList** button above the table. If no boxes are checked when you click the button, then all screen results will be saved.

<figure><img src="/files/ZxvMRagdw0v3kjpZIJWI" alt=""><figcaption><p>Select screen results to save to a ChartList</p></figcaption></figure>

In the window that pops up, you can choose how and where you want to save the symbols.

<figure><img src="/files/1hNi8CKTkFUvqr2QDTru" alt=""><figcaption><p>Save screen results to a new SharpCharts or ACP ChartList, or merge with or replace an existing list</p></figcaption></figure>

First, choose whether you want to create a brand new list to save the symbols to (New List), merge the symbols into an existing ChartList (Merge with List), or replace all the symbols in an existing list (Replace List).

If you are creating a new list, choose whether you want a SharpCharts ChartList or an ACP ChartList, then type in the name for your new list.

Checking the **Number In Sorted Order** checkbox will prepend numbers to the name of each chart in the ChartList so that they are saved in the same order as they are currently sorted in the screen results table.

If you are merging or replacing, select the existing list (whether SharpCharts or ACP) from the dropdown menu on the form.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Note:** ChartLists are limited to 1000 saved charts. If your screen results contain more than 1000 symbols, only the first 1000 will be saved to the list.
{% endhint %}

## Customizing the Screener

### Changing Summary View Settings

The table of screen results on the Summary tab can be customized in a number of different ways.

First, use the **Timeframe** dropdown menu above the table to change the timeframe used to calculate the Change and Percent Change values in the table.

Second, if you don't need all the standard columns in the Summary View table, you can click the **Columns** button above the table and click on the columns you want to exclude. Visible columns will be checked and highlighted in dark gray, while excluded columns will be unchecked and highlighted in light gray. Simply click the column again to toggle it back to visibility.

Finally, use the **Entries Per Page** dropdown menu above the table to change the number of results that are displayed at one time (the default is 50 results). If you have more results than will fit on the page, “Previous” and “Next” buttons will be available at the bottom of the results table, allowing you to scroll through the pages of results.

<figure><img src="/files/N0PiLXMhFwolgiYophXF" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the buttons below the table to navigate through multiple pages of screen results</p></figcaption></figure>

### Pinning the Screen Results Section

The screener combines the screen criteria and the screen results on a single page, but at times you will be more focused on the criteria (when building the screen) or the results (when reviewing the securities that meet your criteria). Pinning the Screen Results section allows you to scroll the two sections of the page independently, as well as resizing them to focus more on one section at a time.

To pin the Screen Results section, click the **Pushpin** button at the top right of the Screen Results section.

<figure><img src="/files/nY9hag9fCnqtRDbbMMFD" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the Pushpin button to pin the screen results pane at a specific height</p></figcaption></figure>

When first pinned, each section will take up half of the browser window. To change the relative height of the two sections, click and drag the small bar in the center between the two sections (outlined in green in the screenshot below).

<figure><img src="/files/pAR2J5d5m7MVhnJy0XJX" alt=""><figcaption><p>Use the resizing bar and the Arrow and Caret buttons to resize the screen results panel</p></figcaption></figure>

While pinned, two additional buttons will appear next to the Pushpin button.

Use the **Arrow** button (closest to the Pushpin) to maximize the Screen Results so they occupy the whole browser window. Click the button again to revert the Screen Results section to its previous size.

The **Caret** button is used to minimize the Screen Results, so that only the Screen Criteria section is showing. This can be handy when choosing your screen criteria in a small browser window. Click the button again to revert the Screen Results section to its previous size.

To unpin the Screen Results section, click the **Pushpin** button again.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.stockcharts.com/scanning-and-alerts/screener.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
